Eye of an abstract painter, enamored with colors and geometric order, but distracted in the confusion of the street by rough textures and surfaces, distorted reflections, curtains; a rusty door; a faded wall; a jungle of colors; translucent windows; interlaced gratings and screens; shadows of wires and trash hoppers mirrored on sidewalks; corners whose angles mark the misalignment of streets and houses&#8230;<br \/>But also: exuberant gardens overflowing their confines, and unexpected landscapes.<br \/>In my camera, I leave a record of the collective improvisation that draws living<br \/>pictures of neighborhoods with a legible, evolving history. Outros revelam a regularidade de algum processo natural (pequenos riachos de \u00e1gua na areia) ou industrial (marcas repetidas em a\u00e7o estampado). Alguns s\u00e3o fractais, com c\u00f3pias do padr\u00e3o principal repetidas, com varia\u00e7\u00f5es, em diferentes escalas. Quando os elementos de um padr\u00e3o s\u00e3o t\u00e3o numerosos que n\u00e3o podem ser vistos individualmente, percebemos uma textura, evocando a nossa imagina\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e1til.<\/p><p>As combina\u00e7\u00f5es de cores que surgem da abras\u00e3o e corros\u00e3o, ou exposi\u00e7\u00e3o de camadas antigas de tinta ou gesso ultrapassam o cotidiano, \u00e0s vezes lembrando as harmonias \u00e1cidas dos mestres da pintura Persa ou dos Expressionistas Abstratos.<\/p><p>Em outros casos, o padr\u00e3o se mostra mais nitidamente quando restrito a preto e branco.<\/p><p>Os materiais e seus defeitos geram linhas e formas infindas. Rachaduras definem campos de linhas paralelas, se transformam no labirinto de uma cidade medieval, ou curvam-se para encontrar os vizinhos em \u00e2ngulos retos. Al\u00e9m dos ret\u00e2ngulos, cilindros e malhas de artefatos industriais, h\u00e1 formas sem um nome pr\u00f3prio, algumas ramificadas, outras como bolhas deformadas, sugerindo bact\u00e9rias ou algum processo org\u00e2nico.<\/p><p>Qual o fio da meada ligando as imagens colecionadas aqui? Em uma palavra, a imperfei\u00e7\u00e3o. Exilados do mundo das formas plat\u00f4nicas, valorizamos os acidentes que fazem os objetos reais existir no tempo, e possuir uma hist\u00f3ria, que os fazem \u00fanicos.<\/p><p>Embora criadas por um pintor abstrato, essas fotografias transcendem a pintura convencional: detalhes cruciais, reflexos e sombras seriam perdidos na trama da tela, na textura do papel, ou na largura do pincel. Apesar da pretens\u00e3o de registrar fielmente as apar\u00eancias de objetos, as imagens neste livro falam a linguagem da pintura abstrata. Studies of earlier peoples focus on their tools, buildings, monuments, as well as on their trash, broken artifacts and graffiti. Today, material culture is complemented by materials science: the analysis and synthesis of all manner of substances, including many with properties previously undreamt of.* But materials, whether<br \/>functional, noble, cheap, outmoded or discarded, have a visual aspect that reveals how they have been changed by people, time and the elements.<\/p><p>This book is about the dents, cracks, oxidation, stains, wrinkling, fracture, abrasion and other insults that mar and thereby beautify materials. It is literally superficial, restricted, in the third dimension, to the nanometric layer visible light manages to penetrate and, once reflected, escape outward to our sight.<\/p><p>Patterns and textures fill these pages.\u2020 Some are random, like the edge of a torn street poster or the splash of paint thrown at a wall. Others reveal the regularity of some natural or industrial process: rivulets of water on sand, or repeated marks on stamped steel. Some are fractal, with copies of the main pattern repeated, with<br \/>variations, at different scales. When the elements of a pattern are too many to see individually, our perception is of a texture, and immediately evokes our tactile imagination.<\/p><p>The color combinations arising from wear and corrosion or the exposure of ancient layers of paint or plaster surpass our everyday visual diet, sometimes calling to mind the acid harmonies of Persian masters or the Abstract Expressionists. In other cases the pattern is best seen in stark black and white.<\/p><p>Materials and their defects generate lines and shapes of endless variety. Cracks define fields of parallel lines, fragment into the labyrinths of medieval city plans, or curve to encounter their neighbors at right angles. Beyond the rectangles, cylinders and grids of industrial production are shapes lacking a specific name,<br \/>some treelike, others deformed blobs suggesting bacteria or some organic process.<\/p><p>What common thread unifies the images collected here? In a word, imperfection. Exiled from the world of Platonic forms, we admire the accidents that allow realobjects to exist in time, to possess a history making each unique.<\/p><p>Although made by an abstract painter, these photographs transcend conventional painting: Crucial details, highlights and shadows would be lost in the weave of the canvas, the grain of the paper, or the spread of the paintbrush. Despite pretending to record faithfully the surfaces of certain objects, the images do speak the language of abstract painting. Photography did not, as Luddites of an earlier age feared, replace painting.
